Grand Moff Tarkin was one of the few Imperial officers whose position surpassed that of Lord Vader. An old fashioned, disciplined adherent of the New Order, he was an obvious choice to command the first Death Star.In an attempt to locate the Rebel base and to stop further Rebel incursions, he commanded the Death Star to destroy Princess Leia’s home planet of Alderaan. Eventually, following the advice of Lord Vader, he was able to locate the Rebel base, and was about to destroy it when the Death Star itself, and Tarkin, were destroyed.
